At 3studio, we were delighted to be part of the post-production process for Catherine Called Birdy, a medieval comedy directed by Lena Dunham and based on Karen Cushman’s beloved 1994 novel. Starring Bella Ramsey as the spirited and defiant Birdy, alongside a stellar cast including Billie Piper, Andrew Scott, Lesley Sharp, Joe Alwyn, and Sophie Okonedo, the film brings a fresh and humorous take on medieval life.

Set in 13th-century England, Catherine Called Birdy follows the rebellious and witty 14-year-old Birdy, who is determined to escape the fate society has planned for her—marriage to the highest bidder. As she fends off unwanted suitors with increasingly outlandish schemes, Birdy’s journey becomes one of self-discovery, family, and the struggle to retain her freedom in a world that seeks to confine her.

Our role in this production involved recording ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement), ensuring that the film’s dialogue remained crisp and immersive throughout its lively and period-accurate storytelling. From comedic exchanges to emotional moments of growth and defiance, ADR played a key role in preserving the authenticity of the performances.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival before its release on Prime Video, Catherine Called Birdy was widely praised for its charm, humour, and Bella Ramsey’s standout performance. Working on a film that blends history, comedy, and a modern sensibility was an exciting experience, and we’re proud to have contributed to its final sound.

If you haven’t yet seen Catherine Called Birdy, it’s available to stream now on Prime Video - an entertaining and empowering adventure that proves history can be just as rebellious as the present!
